Menopause is the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles which also means the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Menopause is a normal part of aging in most females over the age of 40. It happens when the ovaries no longer release an egg every month and menstruation stops. Having said that, some women can go through menopause early or premature menopause. It can be because of hysterectomy surgery or damaged ovaries due to procedures like chemotherapy.
As individuals age, both women and men undergo significant hormonal changes that lead to menopause and andropause, commonly referred to as the “change of life” or the onset of the “golden years.” For women, menopause typically begins around the age of 40 when the ovaries stop functioning, leading to the cessation of ovulation, menstruation, and the production of sex hormones. This hormonal shift affects various organs and can lead to physical and emotional symptoms. Men, on the other hand, experience a gradual decline in testosterone levels starting around the age of 40, with a more noticeable impact around the age of 70. Unlike women, whose hormone production decreases rapidly, men experience a slower, more gradual decline.
During menopause, the ovaries gradually produce less progesterone, the hormone responsible for regulating menstrual cycles and supporting fertility. This decrease in hormone levels can lead to a variety of physical and emotional symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, mood swings, reduced libido, and changes in bone density.
The onset of andropause in men can lead to physical, mental, and emotional changes as testosterone levels decline.
Other symptoms may include loss of muscle mass and strength, memory problems, and sleep disturbances.
In modern medicine, menopause is often managed by prescribing synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to restore hormone levels to those typical of younger women (ages 25-35). However, synthetic hormones, including progesterone, carry risks and should not be used for more than five years due to an increased risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, or colon cancer.
In contrast, integrative medicine and functional medicine offer a more personalized approach by using bioidentical hormones, which are tailored to individual needs based on laboratory analysis. This method minimizes the side effects associated with synthetic hormones and can be equally or more effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms. The treatment focuses on balancing hormone levels naturally while addressing the root causes, such as detoxifying the body, boosting immunity, and supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin B, CoQ10, lipoic acid, calcium, magnesium, and fish oil. Cell therapy, such as using brain cells or pituitary cells, can help repair and rejuvenate the brain and pituitary gland, encouraging natural hormone production and prolonging the function of the ovaries without the risks associated with synthetic hormones.
This holistic approach aims to restore cellular function, leading to improved organ performance, a prolonged youthful state, and enhanced quality of life.
Treatment options for men include various forms of testosterone therapy, such as topical creams, sublingual tablets, or injections. These therapies can help restore blood flow to the penis, improving erectile function. Additionally, chelation therapy, commonly used to treat patients at risk of coronary artery disease due to heavy metal toxicity, has shown promise in treating erectile dysfunction by improving blood circulation. This therapy typically yields positive results within 3-6 months of starting treatment.
Peptide therapy, which targets specific organs, can also be used to repair and rejuvenate testicular cells that produce testosterone, encouraging the regeneration of cells that have deteriorated or lost function.
However, the duration and severity of andropause symptoms can vary, affecting physical and emotional well-being and relationships. Regular consultations with a healthcare provider to monitor hormone levels and other relevant factors are crucial. Self-care measures, including the following, are also important:
Taking these steps can help manage the symptoms of menopause and andropause, leading to a better quality of life during these transitions.
